I woke up at two in the morning today with an extreme case of nausea and stomach ache. This is not the first time my stomach or pain has kept me up at night. The work day is going to be fun.

Digestion issues can be a common and often overlooked symptom in individuals with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a complex condition characterized primarily by widespread musculoskeletal pain, but it can also affect various other systems in the body, including the digestive system. Here are some digestion-related problems that people with fibromyalgia may experience:

  1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Fibromyalgia and IBS frequently co-occur. IBS is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. Many individuals with fibromyalgia also experience IBS symptoms, and the two conditions may share common underlying mechanisms.
  2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD is a condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and irritation. Some people with fibromyalgia report an increased prevalence of GERD symptoms, possibly due to heightened sensitivity to pain and changes in muscle function.
  3. Dyspepsia: Dyspepsia, often referred to as indigestion, can manifest as discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen, bloating, and feelings of fullness after eating a small amount. Fibromyalgia may contribute to or exacerbate dyspeptic symptoms. (This is how I feel this morning)
  4. Food Sensitivities: Some individuals with fibromyalgia report heightened sensitivities to certain foods or food additives. These sensitivities can lead to digestive discomfort, including gas, bloating, and diarrhea. (After many medical test, we have discovered that I am dairy intolerant and am unable to digest animal fat.)
  5. Slow Digestion (Gastroparesis): Gastroparesis is a condition where the stomach takes longer than usual to empty its contents into the small intestine. This can result in symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and a feeling of fullness. While not directly caused by fibromyalgia, some individuals with fibromyalgia may experience slowed digestion.
  6. Inflammation: Fibromyalgia is often associated with systemic inflammation, which may also affect the gastrointestinal tract. Inflammation in the gut can lead to digestive issues and discomfort.

Managing digestion issues with fibromyalgia:

  1. Dietary Modifications: Pay attention to your diet and identify any specific foods that trigger or worsen your digestive symptoms. Some people find relief by avoiding trigger foods or following diets that are gentle on the digestive system. I am constantly adjusting my diet.
  2. Medications: Your healthcare provider may recommend medications to manage specific digestive symptoms. For example, antacids or proton pump inhibitors can help with GERD, while medications like antispasmodics may be prescribed for IBS-related symptoms.
  3. Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate digestive symptoms in both fibromyalgia and conditions like IBS. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises into your daily routine. Considering that I suffer from generalized anxiety, I have always struggled with stress.
  4. Fiber and Hydration: Ensure you’re consuming enough dietary fiber and staying adequately hydrated. Fiber can help regulate bowel movements, while dehydration can worsen digestive discomfort.
  5. Small, Frequent Meals: Eating smaller, more frequent meals rather than large meals can sometimes ease digestive distress.
  6. Probiotics: Some individuals find relief from digestive symptoms by taking probiotic supplements, which can help promote a healthy gut microbiome.
  7. Consult a Specialist: If your digestive symptoms are severe or persistent, consider consulting a gastroenterologist who specializes in gastrointestinal disorders. They can provide more targeted evaluation and treatment options.

It’s essential to work closely with your healthcare team to address both fibromyalgia and any associated digestion issues. Fibromyalgia is a complex condition, and treatment plans should be tailored to your specific symptoms and needs.
